01

What an installment loan is

An installment loan is any loan repaid in equal, scheduled payments over a fixed term. Most personal loans are installment loans, as are auto loans and mortgages; what sets them apart from cards is the fixed balance and end date.

You borrow once, the lender pays out the full amount, and each payment covers that period’s interest plus part of the principal. The balance falls every month and reaches zero on the final payment. You cannot add to it, which is a feature: the debt can only get smaller.

People comparing discover personal loans with other lenders are, in practice, comparing installment loans. The structure is the same everywhere. What differs is the amount range, the APR, the fee and the term choices, and those four details decide what the loan costs you.

Lenders in our network consider installment loan requests from $500 to $5,000, with terms from about 6 to 60 months depending on the lender and your state.

Installment loans vs revolving credit

An installment loan has a fixed amount, rate and end date, while revolving credit such as a credit card lets you borrow, repay and borrow again up to a limit with a payment that changes each month.

FeatureInstallment loanRevolving credit
BalanceFixed at the startChanges as you spend and repay

End dateKnown on day oneNone until you pay in full

Both affect credit, but differently. Paying an installment loan on time builds payment history, and using it to clear a card can lower utilization. Our full comparison, installment loan vs revolving credit, covers the credit-score effects in detail.

03

Choose an amount and a term

Pick the smallest amount that covers the cost and the shortest term whose payment fits your budget. On an installment loan, the term is the lever that trades a lower payment for a higher total cost.

At a 24.99% sample APR, $2,000 over 12 months costs about $190.08 a month and roughly $281 in interest. Over 24 months the payment drops to about $106.73, and interest rises to roughly $562. Our personal loan calculator shows the trade-off for any figures.

04

Installment loans compared with discover personal loans

Discover personal loans are fixed-rate installment loans with no origination fee and, in recent published reviews, a $2,500 minimum and terms of 36 to 84 months, which suits larger, longer loans better than a $1,000 one-year need.

We are not affiliated with Discover and cannot see or manage a Discover loan. The comparison comes down to fit:

If you needConsider
$500 to $2,499Lenders with lower minimums, such as those in our network
A term under 36 monthsLenders that offer 6, 12, 18 or 24 months
$2,500 or more with good creditA large bank as well as our network

Whichever lender you choose, the math of an installment loan is the same, so APR and total of payments are the fair way to compare.

05

How installment payments are calculated

Installment payments come from an amortization formula that spreads principal and interest evenly across the term. Early payments are mostly interest; later payments are mostly principal, because interest is charged on the shrinking balance.

On a $2,000 loan at 24.99% over 24 months, the first payment of about $106.73 includes roughly $41.65 in interest and $65.08 of principal. By the final year, most of each payment goes to principal. That is why an extra payment early in the term saves more interest than the same extra payment near the end.

The formula is the same across lenders, so if you know the amount, APR and term, you can check any quote yourself. Our guide how are installment loan payments calculated shows the formula step by step, and the rates page explains how lenders arrive at the APR.

06

Short terms and long terms

Short terms of 6 to 18 months suit small amounts and keep total interest low; longer terms of 24 to 60 months make larger amounts affordable month to month but cost more overall.

Some lenders price shorter terms lower, so the advantage of a short term can be larger than the payment alone suggests. On the other hand, a payment you struggle to make is worse than a slightly longer term, since late fees and credit damage cost more than a few extra months of interest.

A practical approach is to choose the longest term you would be comfortable with, then pay extra when you can. Because most personal installment loans have no prepayment penalty, you keep the safety of a lower required payment while still finishing early. Confirm the prepayment terms on the offer before you sign.

07

Secured and unsecured installment loans

Most personal installment loans are unsecured, meaning approval rests on income and credit, while secured versions use a vehicle or savings as collateral and can come with a lower rate or a higher amount.

Branch-based lenders are more likely to offer secured options. A car title used as collateral can turn a decline into an approval, but it also means the lender can take the vehicle after a serious default. Weigh that risk carefully if you depend on the car to get to work.

Savings-secured loans from credit unions are a lower-risk version: the collateral is money you already have, and the loan builds credit history. They are worth considering if you are rebuilding credit and do not need the funds urgently.

08

What installment loans do to your credit

An installment loan can help your credit over time through on-time payments and a better credit mix, after a small initial dip from the hard inquiry and the new account.

Payment history is the largest factor in common scoring models, so each on-time payment adds to your record. If you use the loan to pay down cards, the drop in utilization can lift your score within a month or two. Paying the loan off closes the account; it stays on your report as a positive closed account for years.

The risks run the other way. A payment more than 30 days late can be reported and stays on your report for seven years. Setting up autopay is the simplest protection.

09

Fees and costs to check

Beyond interest, check for an origination fee, late fees, returned-payment fees and any prepayment penalty. The APR includes the origination fee, so comparing APRs captures most of the cost difference between offers.

Origination fees typically range from none to about 10 percent of the amount and are usually deducted before funding. On a $1,500 loan, a 7 percent fee is $105, so you would receive $1,395. If you need the full $1,500 in hand, request about $1,615.

Late fees are often a flat amount or a percentage of the payment, subject to state limits, and some lenders offer a grace period of 10 to 15 days. Ask whether the lender charges for paper statements or payments by phone; a few do. Everything should appear in the Truth in Lending disclosure before you sign.

Where to get a personal installment loan

Personal installment loans come from four main sources: banks, credit unions, online lenders and branch-based finance companies. Each one tends to serve a different credit range and amount, so the right source depends on your profile.

Banks often offer the lowest personal loan rates to borrowers with good credit and existing accounts, but many start at $2,500 or more. Credit unions, which some shoppers check alongside discover loans, cap rates lower than most other lenders and frequently make small personal loans to members, sometimes after a short membership period. Online lenders cover the widest credit range and usually decide fastest, with minimums from $1,000. Branch-based finance companies make the smallest personal loans, sometimes from about $500, and are more likely to consider rebuilding credit, at higher APRs.

Our service sends one request to lenders in our network, which includes online and branch-based lenders. If you also belong to a credit union, check its personal loan rates too; a quote from your own credit union is a useful benchmark for any offer.

Who a personal installment loan suits

A personal installment loan suits borrowers who know the exact amount they need, want a predictable payment and can commit to a fixed schedule. It suits people far less when the cost is uncertain or ongoing.

Good fits include a single repair, a dental bill, a move or a consolidation of two or three card balances. In each case the amount is known up front and the personal loan ends on a set date. The fixed payment also makes budgeting easier for people paid on a regular schedule.

Poorer fits include monthly shortfalls that repeat, projects whose cost might grow, and expenses small enough to cover from the next paycheck. For those, a budget change, a small savings buffer or a credit line you only draw on if needed may be better. Our personal loans guide explains these trade-offs with examples, including how small personal loans compare with discover personal loans for different amounts.

Comparing installment loan offers

Compare installment loan offers by APR and total of payments first, then by the payment amount, term, fee and how much you will receive. A lower payment is only better if the total cost and term also work for you.

Line the offers up in a simple table with those columns. The cheapest offer is usually obvious once you see the totals together. If two are close, choose the lender with the clearer agreement, better hardship options or a lower late fee.

Our compare lenders page lists published ranges for 20 lenders, and our eligibility guide explains what each one typically looks for. Borrowers checking discover personal loan rates against smaller lenders can use both pages as a baseline. Visitors who began with a search for discover personal loans or discover loans will find the comparison works the same for any installment lender.
